used the printf, it gave me errors so i reverted back to "\c" which didnt. if all else fails ill write it in vb

Then why didn't you either read the man page to learn the correct syntax for printf or post the command you used and ask for help?

yes i read the line causing the problem it doesnt recognize "$" so the file name wont change at all so it throws back a syntax error.

You still haven't answered the question: What command do you think it is trying to execute?

Where is the command on that line?

HINT: $oldname is not a command.

i used that command before to rename a file....mayb it doesnt work well with the choice menu

What command?
There is no command on that line!
All you have is a filename.
It needs a command to precede it.
