that syntax error means that it will not allow me to change the oldname of the file to the new name. so do you have any suggestions. or any other universal code that would work on my system as well

NO! It means that there is an error in the code. If the code was correct but the system wouldn't allow you to change the name, you wouldn't get a syntax error.

What part of "show the code" do you not understand?

The script you want is very simple and will run on any *nix system, but I'm not going to write it for you.

Isn't that the code you posted at the very beginning? Do you mean to tell me you have read this entire thread and not made a single change? And you are STILL not using [code] tags!

Have you read the line that is causing the problem? What command do you think it is executing?
