It will be done (implicitly or explicitly) with a temporary file.
If you prefer the implicit approach you can:

1. Use sed with the i option if your sed implementation supports it:

sed -i ...

2. Use the Perl solution provided in the fourth post above.

Hey
Once i entered the command sed 's/^/10Jun2006 /' infile>new
its deleted the entire data in file; please sugest me to reback to the original format;

Let me know whether to use as sed -i 's/^/10Jun2006 /' infile>new like that..

you don't need to redirect to a new file.

sed -i 's/^/10Jun2006 /' infile

You should always backup your files before modifying them.

You can get it again only if you hava a backup.
The command I gave you won't wipe out your data,
you should have used a different command ...
