AWK - how to "cut" a variable?

Hello,

I am using awk and I define a parameter from the value of a field:

Code:

 
awk 'tok1!=1{var=$1;tok1=1}
{rest of the script}'

The format of "var" can be "mX" or "mXX", where X is a number.
I would like to obtain "X" or "XX" instead of "mXX".

How can I do that with awk?
