Extract Part of a "Word", using AWK or SED????

I have been lurking on this forum for some time now and appreciate Everyone's help. I need to find a way to get the SystemID from this XML file. The file is much larger than just this one line but I can grep and get this line Printed. But really just need the "systemid".

<test123: prefintem ="systemid">/school.01234.domain.com</test321: prefitem>

What I need is to just school.01234.domain.com from the entire line. Since there is just one spaces I haven't had success with AWK or SED.
Thank you guys for all you previous and future help.

Hammer & Screwdriver Since you got that far without awk...

Code:
> echo "<test123: prefintem ="sytemid">/school.01234.domain.com</test321: prefitem>" | cut -d">" -f2 | cut -d"<" -f1
/school.01234.domain.com

Or:

Code:
sed -n '/systemid/s .*>/\([^<]*\).* \1 p' infile

or:
Code:
 sed 's|<[^>]*>||g'

This works but adds a space before the name. Thanks for the suggestion I will save it in case the first one fails on me.

Thanks to everyone for helping out.

Or (as it seams every record matches systemid):

Code:
sed 's|<[^>]*>/*||g'

I'm not sure if the OP wants /school.01234.domain.com or school.01234.domain.com ...

Suggestion: adding two new groups "sed" and "awk"

Majority of the questions are pertaining file/string parsing w.r.t sed or awk It would be nice to have these two as their own sub category under shell-programming-scripting which can avoid lot of duplicate posts. (1 Reply)
