HELP!!!

I'm keep getting "sed: Function s/PETS/dog cannot be parsed."

I have 2 files that list...

# cat FILE1.txt
dog
cat
mouse

# cat FILE2.txt
my pets are
PETS

I put this into a variable...

# A=`cat FILE1.txt`
# sed "s/PETS/$A" FILE2.txt > FILE3.txt

I would like to get the following result

# cat FILE3.txt
my pets are
dog
cat
mouse

You're missing a terminating slash after $A

That's not only the point, you can't replace a line with a variable with included newlines.
One way to accomplish that is:

Code:
sed -e '/PETS/r FILE1.txt' -e '/PETS/d' FILE2.txt > FILE3.txt

Great - a followup question

That works great...Smilie

But now I need to add a leading and a trailing characters between the lines...

ex.

<p>dog</p>
<p>cat</p>
<p>mouse</p>

Thanks for your help in advance....
