Data AWK -v

Hi All,

Could you please anyone tell me what's wrong with my script below?

echo "Please enter username"?
read $name

awk -F: -v user="$name" '{print $1 ":*RM*" $2 ":" $3 ":" $4 ":" $5 ":" $6 ":" $7 ":" $8 ":" $9}' /etc/shadow

The problem is:

1. It adding *RM* for all username which i only want particular username
2. When i go to the actual etc/shadow file, it does not actually add *RM* on to the shadow file.
But when i run the script, it shows adding *RM* as a result of printf command but not to the actual file.

Am i missing any important concept or myscript simply does not work?

or maybe i should use sed instead?

Please help

1. For this you need to grep first that user name then pipe it to awk command.
or you can try this command also
grep "$name" /etc/shadow | sed 's/\(.*\):\(.*\):\(.*\):\(.*\):\(.*\):\(.*\):\(.*\):\(.*\):\(.*\)/\1:*RM*\2:\3:\4:\5:\6:\7:\8:\9/'

2. It may be noted that awk and sed are stream editor and they do not change actual file, for this you have to redirect the results to the temporary file, observe that temp file and if satisfied then cp with the original.

this is not needed as awk can get $name. It is also much easier to work with fields than regular expressions.
@OP, you forgot to get name in awk

Code:
awk -F: -v user="$name" '$1 == user{ ....}'

Ohh cool.... then it is much easier now.. i was not aware of this.. thanks

Now the command will look like
awk -F: -v user="$name" '$1 == user{print $1":*RM*" $2 ":" $3 ":" $4 ":" $5 ":" $6 ":" $7 ":" $8 ":" $9}' /etc/shadow
