string editing in files

Hi all,

I'm fairly new to scripting in linux and need some help.

I have an file that looks something like this:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
# Some comments
# Some comments
# Some comments
# Some comments
# Some comments
# Some comments
abc:/path/to/somewhere:X
asdf:/path2/to/somewhere:Y
qwert:/path3/to/somewhere:z
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I need a command that can cut out all characters in the file except the

abc
asdf
qwert

characters and then export them as environment variables.

Thanks in advance.

Code:
eval `sed -n 's/:/=/p' file`

This takes any line with a colon in it, changes the colon to an equals sign, and evaluates it in the current shell.

Code:
#  awk -F":" '!(/^#/||/^ /||/^$/){print $1}' infile
abc
asdf
qwert

Will set you on your way....
