Convert String to Date Unix

Hi people,
I need to convert a string eg 09/13/2008 to a valid unix date.

valid date in the sense give the format in which you want it...

What function? What format does it expect?

If in doubt, use the ISO standard form: YYYY-MM-DD.

To convert 09/13/2008 to ISO format:

date=09/13/2008
oldIFS=$IFS
IFS=/
set -f
set -- $date
set +f
IFS=$oldIFS
isodate=$3-$1-$2

Convert String to Date
