Shell script

Hi

I have a process with multiple instances like
abc0 and abc1. abc0 is running continously but abc1 runs sometimes only.
I want to echo abc1 only when it runs else not.

Please provide me a script to do so.

Re:

My problem is bit complex....

It is like, we have made a dashboard for monitoring the background processes.

fun1()
{
row=`expr $row + 1`
tput cup $row $3
if [ $1 -eq 1 ]
then
echo "\033[32m"$2"\033[37m"
elif [ $1 -gt 1 ]
then
echo "\033[33m"$2"\033[37m"
else
echo "\033[31m"$2"\033[37m"
fi
}
echo ' '
row=`expr $row + 1`
tput cup $row 62
echo ''"\033[36m""USSD : :""\033[37m"'' `cat /home/user/shift/prov/flexi_ussd.txt | cut -d: -f1`
fun1 `ps -ef|grep USSD_INSTANCE_1 |grep -v grep |wc -l|tr -s ' '` 'USSD_INSTANCE_1'
fun1 `ps -ef|grep USSD_INSTANCE_2 |grep -v grep |wc -l|tr -s ' '` 'USSD_INSTANCE_2'
row=`expr $row + 1`
tput cup $row 62
echo ''"\033[36m""SMS : :""\033[37m"'' `cat /home/user/shift/prov/flexi_sms.txt | cut -d: -f1`

Here is displays 'USSD_INSTANCE_1' in green colour as it runs continously
but 'USSD_INSTANCE_2' does`nt runs continously and is shown in red colour. I want that 'USSD_INSTANCE_2' should be echoed only if it is running(No red colour).

You need to change the logic so it doesn't run fun1 on processes which are optional, or change fun1 so it accepts an additional parameter indicating whether or not a process is required.

You should also probably avoid mixing raw escape codes with tput -- use either one or the other, but do not mix.

(For understanding your script, it might help to understand that ESC[31m selects red color, ESC[32m selects green color, ESC[33m selects yellow, and ESC[37m selects (resets to?) gray color.)

Also, why don't you refactor the messy ps handling to a function as well?

Code:
instances () {
  local tail
  tail=${1#?}
  ps -ef | grep -c "[${1%$tail}]$tail"
}

Call like instances USSD_INSTANCE_1

Finally, any cat file | cut -options is better written as cut -options file -- google for Useless Use of Cat
