Hi Madhan

Thanks for the one-liner.
But While executing your statement,i am getting a syntax error.Since i am a newbie in awk,can u help me out where the error is.

[!]root: awk 'BEGIN{ while(getline < test1){ arr[$0]++ } }{ if (!($0 in arr)){print}}' test2
awk: syntax error near line 1
awk: illegal statement near line 1
awk: syntax error near line 1
awk: bailing out near line 1

The file names are test1 and test2.

Thanks

Hi Era

"Not much help if you have lines where a host NAME is in both files, but the address is different."

That is exactly what i want to change,The IP address for a few host entries.
So can i conclude that comm command is of no use(Pertaining to my prob)?

So i think i will have to resort to scripts and PERL scripts.
Would appreciate if you/anybody could help me out with one.

Note - I have DNS configured in the box. But these host entries are for the Application running in it and right now,the easiest and perhaps the best way is to put entries in host file for name resolution.

that should work.

If you are in solaris, use nawk

grep can do the job as per OP request
Code:
grep -vf hosts.new hosts

Hi Madhan

Using nawk instead of awk in your script has helpmed me achieve my results.
Thankyou very much for your wonderful help..

Hi Danmero

grep -vf hosts.new hosts ...is throwing out this error
grep: illegal option -- f
Usage: grep -hblcnsviw pattern file . . .

Thanks to all others who took time helping me out.
