for loop control

Hi,

I have taken a piece of code from a book, which is working as per the specification. The code....

for entry in *
do
if [ -d $entry ]
then
echo $entry
fi
done

The sub-directories present in the current directory will be displayed while executing.

Can any one explain me the above code?

Regards
Saravan

$ find . -type d

The above will give you the Directories.

If you want to go with the scripting for something to do with that use ass below

for entry in `find . -type d`
do
echo $entry
done

The for command simply assigns to the variable entry each item in the in list in turn, and performs the do part. The shell expands the * to a list of all entries in the current directory.

The [ command (yes, that's the name of a command; it's also known as test) has an option -d which specifies that it should examine whether the argument given after the -d is the name of a directory. If the directory does not exist, or if that name exists in the file system but is not a directory, then test fails, causing if to skip the then branch (and take the else branch if one exists).
