Try this:

Code:
datestamp=$(date +'%D')
timestamp=$(date +'%M:%S')

awk -v ds=$datestamp -v ts=$timestamp 'NR==9 { printf ds, ts } { print $0 } ' abc.log

The output didn't change at all.
That is the time stamp is not printed.

If your awk supports the -v option, you can specify multiple -v options to set multiple variables. But the original script was basically fine; you just need to quote the string properly. Add double quotes around $date and it should work.
