Question grep "(^|[^0-9])[0-9]\{16\}($|[^0-9])" *.log >> no worky
Per the title really. Looking for 16 digit numbers in various log files:

Code:
grep "[0-9]\{16\}" *.log

...works, but obviously includes log lines that have longer numbers. The numbers in question can come at the beginning, middle or end of the line, hence the thread's title, which doesn't work:

grep "(^|[^0-9])[0-9]\{16\}($|[^0-9])" *.log

Any ideas?

Hi.

The first thing that comes to mind is that versions of grep on Solaris and GNU/Linux do not recognize alternation symbol "|" as having special properties. Does yours? Either egrep or grep -E may need to be used. ... cheers, drl

Problem with "find" and "grep" command
