if ! grep -q pattern1 MyFile || ! grep -q pattern2 MyFile; then
  echo hi

  echo hello
fi

You need to understand that [ is not part of the syntax of the if command's syntax, but a helper utility for testing things (files, strings, what not). And in this particular case, you want grep to test things, not this [ command.

If your sed does not have newlines, then either switch to something which does (Perl should be easy; it basically allows you to use sed substitution syntax, in spades) or use a different, unique character, and change it to a newline with tr

Code:
sed "/pattern/ s/$/_New Row/" file | tr _ '\012'

... presuming you don't have underscores elsewhere in your file, and provided your tr understands '\012' to mean newline.
