ls doesn't normally read input from a pipe. Try this.

awk -v v=$1 -F: '$1==v {print $6}' /etc/passwd | xargs ls -ld

or, more or less equivalently

ls -ld `grep $1 /etc/passwd | cut -d: -f6`

You seem to have misplaced the backticks in your original code. Note, those are not regular apostrophes, but grave ones (ASCII code 96).

You probably don't need to use /etc/passwd to find a user's home directory because the shell will expand ~username for you. Try...
