I can use the following command to create a file with some name then underscore and then date appended to it in the format 'DD-MM-YYYY':

touch "newfile_`date '+%d-%m-%Y'`"

But it gives me error when I try with the similar command to create a file with the date format 'DD/MM/YYYY'. I know that '/' (forward slash) is a Unix meta character and I cannot escape it using '\' (backward slash).

So, please give your suggestion(s) to create a file with the above said format.

Forward slash is not a meta-character. But it is the only printable character that cannot appear in a filename. You could do this...

mkdir DD
mkdir DD/MM
touch DD/MM/YYYY

That will work. But it creates a file named YYYY.

Thanks for the reply. But I didn't mean to create a file inside directory DD/MM. I need to create a file in the current working dir where the name of the file should be "xxxx_cur_date", where the current date format should be 'DD/MM/YYYY' instead of 'DD-MM-YYYY', which I able to create using the command I posted above.

This is your first trouble with a filename with slashes, in the future you'll get many more.
Never use slashes for a filename!

Filenames with embedded newlines or spaces or asterisks have problems because it is possible for filenames like that to exist. There is no problem with filenames that contain slashes because they don't exist. royalibrahim, it cannot be done.
