scriping grep

scriping grep
i would like to script grep in order that it reads in a list of terms from a file and then searches through text files reporting a match or not in the text files.

If the manual page for your grep does not document such a facility, it probably doesn't have it. Look for the -f option.

-f sort of helps but i want to automate the search to report whether a result is returned

do you think you might be able to give the start of a script that would do this?

grep print the matches, no output means none found. If you want to do something more or different then something like

Code:
grep -f patternsfile files ... && echo found

If you want a report for every file regardless of whether or not it matched, then you need to process them in a loop.

Code:
for file in big bigg biiig list of files; do
  if grep -f patternsfile "$file" >/dev/null; then
    echo "wonder of wonders in $file"
  else
    echo "no wonder: $file"
  fi
done

This is bad design as such; but for debugging, it might help you verify that all the files are being looked at.

if there's output returned from grep, it means its found. So theoretically, there's no need to do an extra "echo something is found" statement.
