AWK set FILENAME via user input

I am trying to write a awk script that prompts user for input to set the FILENAME varable. I can get it set, but I think awk is not doing anything with it.

this is what I have so far

Code:
#!/usr/bin/nawk -f

BEGIN {
      FILENAME = ""
      printf "Enter name of file to check in : "
      getline file < "-"
      dir = "/my/very/long/path/here/"
      FILENAME = dir file.dat"
      }

What am I doing wrong??? Is this even possible??

Don't know what you're trying to achieve but if you want to process a file given from the user you can do something like:

Code:
#!/usr/bin/nawk -f

BEGIN{
  printf("Enter filename : ")
  getline file < "-"
  dir = "/my/very/long/path/here/"
  file = dir file
  while((getline < file) > 0) {
    # Do your stuff here
  }
}

Or:

Code:
#!/bin/sh

echo -n "Enter filename : "
read filename

nawk '
{
  # Do your stuff here
}
' "/my/very/long/path/here/""$filename"

Regards
