Delete old logs
Hello All,
We have a directory where we have old archived logs. They are numbered <logfile>.log.1 till <logfile>.log.100 or more. I just want to keep 10 log files and delete others through the script.
Please advise.

One way assuming you want to keep the most recent logs:

#!/bin/ksh
set -A arr `ls -rt logfiles.*`
limit=$(( ${#arr} - 10 ))
let i=0
while true
do
   rm -f ${arr[i]}
   i=$(( $i + 1))
done

# 3

I am getting this error:
./delete_oldlogs.sh
./delete_oldlogs.sh[9]: arr: subscript out of range

cat delete_oldlogs.sh:
#!/bin/ksh
set -A arr `ls -rt logfile.log.*`
limit=$(( ${#arr} - 10 ))
let i=0
while true
do
rm -f ${arr[i]}
i=$(( $i + 1))
done
# 4

It means you only had 9 of those files to start with, assuming I understood your requirements.

Normally, logs are handled like this. Don't worry about numbers of files, just keep everything for the past X days (replace the X below with days, like 14):

find /path/to/logs/ -mtime +X -name 'logfiles.log.*' -exec rm -f {} \;
