assuming delim is ,, or more commas
Code:
# more file
"x1,2",,,,"y",,,,,,"z"
# awk 'BEGIN{FS=",,+"}{print $1 }' file
"x1,2"
# awk 'BEGIN{FS=",,+"}{print $2 }' file
"y"
# awk 'BEGIN{FS=",,+"}{print $3 }' file
"z"

Acutually, ",," means there is a null value for this field. As for "x1,2",,"y",,,"z",,,
1,3,and 6 has value while other fields are null. So I think ,, cannot be the delim.

so judging by what you said, you want to get
"x1,2" , followed by a blank field (cos this is the second field), and then "y" , right?

Yes.

This is a general question. How to differentiate , in the double-quoted text string from delim.

Question extend jcaobens soln

If your first column always has this requirement, extend Jacoben's solution -
Code:
 echo "x1,2",,"y",,,"z",,,|sed 's/\(.*,.*\),\(.*\),\(.*\),\(.*\),\(.*\),\(.*\),\(.*\),\(.*\),\(.*\)/\1 \2 \3 \4 \5 \6 \7 \8 \9/g'

PS: Subject should say - Jacoden's. Sorry about the typo.
