Would you please tell me how to use the shell variable in the awk body?

I try follows but they all do not work, pls kindly help me:
1.

awk 'BEGIN{print("'"$str"'"}' file1 > file3

My OS is solaris, if this is the real cuase?

Would you pls tell me the right way on solaris to call variable in awk.
