string matching in perl

Hi,

I have to search for a string in a variable.
Say the variable is var1='ERROR: Make [abc:java[version1]] as enabled'

here i want to match which are in red color. other like abc etc could change.
Can you tell me the exact command something like the below in perl

if ($var1=~ m/ERROR: Make ..................... as enabled/g)

Thanks and regards
Ammu

Here it is doing it in unix:
Code:
typeset -i mCnt
mVar1='ERROR: Make [abc:java[version1]] as enabled'
mVar2="ERROR: Make.*java.*enabled"
mCnt=`echo $mVar1 | egrep -c "$mVar2"`
if [ $mCnt -ne 0 ]; then
 echo "FOUND"
else
 echo "NOT FOUND"
fi

Probably the following is what you need

Code:
$var1 =~ m/ERROR: Make.*java.*as enabled/g
