It kinda worked, but if there are no files, it returns "grep" in $FILES, which is not what I want.

I wanna do something like

Code:
for FILES in gspp*
  if test $FILES = grep
   break
  mv $FILES ../archive/$FILES
  ...
done

But I get errors if it breaks the loop and then hits the "done". It says that "done" is not expected.

Is this your exact script or just the pseudo-code ?
Check the syntax - you will need to close "if" and also how you do string comparison.

Code:
for FILES in grep gspp*
do
if [ ${FILES} = grep ]
then
break
else
echo "Loading $FILES" >> ../path/mylog.log
mv $FILES temp.tmp
sqlldr user/pass@DB control=/path/control.ctl
 bad=/path/bad.bad log=/path/log.log
mv temp.tmp ../archive/$FILES
echo "Load of $FILES complete!" >> ../path/mylog.log
echo "Deleting remote $FILES" >> /path/mylog.log
/path/delfile.sh $FILES
ftp -nvi < delfile.ftp >> ../path/mylog.log
fi
done

This is still executing the code in the "else" block, which obviously means the comparison isn't returning what I expect. This is my actual code, other than me changing the paths and login.

why do you have this ?
Code:
for FILES in grep gspp*

why 'grep' is on the list?

So you're iterating through a list with a string 'grep' there FIRST. And then you 'break' out of the loop if you encounter 'grep'. Hmmm..... don't you think it'll exit the loop immediately?

No. It greps all of the files in the directory using that pattern. This works fine if there are files that match in the directory. If there aren't is wherein the problem lies. It does not go into the "if", only the "else".

I think we're all a bit lost here.

Can you describe in words what exactly you are trying to achieve, without reference to any code.
