What is index?

hi, Smilie
In a shell script i came accross the following lines

1.for i in ` find /home/oracle -name ch'
2.do
3.echo $i
4.idx=`expr index $i .`
5.done

Here iam not able to understand the porpose of the word "index" in line 4.

any help ?

expr index <string1> <string2>

returns the starting position of string2 in string1. - number of characters into string1.

Hi..
the key word index in the 4th line specifies the occurence of the searching element ie., ch as per your code... I am not sure abt my answer.But still I guess this will help you to get some clue..
