it will return the same value

Hi krrishv,

It will return the same value why because it always get the last value(i.e $NF) of $(NF-1) in the array. So we have to sort it in descending order first,so that we can get the output as esham wanted.

Thanks for the output, but i am again in problem. Putting the logic in a defferent way,

my file is like

.iso.org.dod.internet.mgmt.mib-2.system.sysORLastChange.0
.iso.org.dod.internet.mgmt.mib-2.interfaces.ifNumber.0
.iso.org.dod.internet.mgmt.mib-2.interfaces.ifTable.ifEntry.ifIndex.1
.iso.org.dod.internet.mgmt.mib-2.interfaces.ifTable.ifEntry.ifIndex.2
.iso.org.dod.internet.mgmt.mib-2.ip.ipNetToMediaTable.ipNetToMediaEntry.ipNetToMediaIfIndex.1.172.16.2.1

here the needed output is

.iso.org.dod.internet.mgmt.mib-2.system.sysORLastChange
.iso.org.dod.internet.mgmt.mib-2.interfaces.ifNumber
.iso.org.dod.internet.mgmt.mib-2.interfaces.ifTable.ifEntry.ifIndex
.iso.org.dod.internet.mgmt.mib-2.interfaces.ifTable.ifEntry.ifIndex
.iso.org.dod.internet.mgmt.mib-2.ip.ipNetToMediaTable.ipNetToMediaEntry.ipNetToMediaIfIndex

That means, if the field starts with digit, and the remaining fields are also digit, then remove the portion where the digit starts.

Please help..

try this

awk 'BEGIN {FS=OFS="." } {for (i=1;i<=NF;i++){if($i ~ /[a-z]/) {printf("%s%s",OFS,$i)}}printf ("\n") }' file
