I used your input and got the following output. I dont find the problem what you said.

Code:
Ref: 12345678^M
Value Date: 28-MAY-2006^M
Debit A/c: 54321235 - abcdef^M
Customer : 100210547 - abcdef^M
Debit Amount: 9999999999.00^M
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX USD^M
Description: wire to Wxxxxxx^M
^M
Exchange Rate: 1.00000^M

Code:
sed "/^Debit Amount:/ s/\(.\{27\}\)\(....\)\(.*\)/\1\3\\
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX\2\3/" b $file > tmp

Change number 27 to length from the start of line till blank space between number and currency code

Power sed etc

Hi anbu
It is the b argument which is not liked :

sed: 0602-419 Cannot find or open file b.

I am running with AIX Version 4
man sed
sed Command
Purpose
Provides a stream editor.
Syntax
sed [ -n ] Script [ File ... ]
sed [ -n ] [ -e Script ] ... [ -f ScriptFile ] ... [ File ... ]

Use this
Code:
sed "/^Debit Amount:/ s/\(.\{27\}\)\(....\)\(.*\)/\1\3\\
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX\2\3/" $file > tmp

# 14

sed etc

I did thanks anbu23, but then got the last 3 characters on the right on line 5 remaining, as previously illustrated.
I could always add a 2nd sed command to strip off the last 3 characters
of line 5, I suppose ?
Not very scientific, but it would work.

Thanks for your continuing support.
