Python alternative:
Code:
#!/usr/bin/python
## reading a string character by character.
string1 = "this is a string"
for ch in string1:
     print ch,

But, in Python, string manipulation can be done using slices. eg
string1[0] is "t", string1[1] is "h"...and so on.

temp="ABCDRFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ"

varlen=`echo $temp | awk '{print length($0) }'`
echo $varlen
ctr=1
while [ $varlen -ne 0 ]
do
ch=`echo $temp| cut -c$ctr`
echo $ch
varlen=`expr $varlen - 1`
ctr=`expr $ctr + 1`
done
