what OS are you under?

do you have any other awk's? like gawk?

yes, it works with gawk. what is the difference between these tools?

there is one problem actually left:

the mac address has 6 sections, seperated by colons. that is: the first two digits have to be discarded. could you change the code a little, so I can keep only the following 12 digits. thanks!
