Hi I am using the following awk command for splitting the file as suggested. It has been working fine, but now I am getting an error, when the number of patterns are increased.

Below is the command I am using:

Code:
nawk '{
          if ( $1 == "<bw" )
          {
           n=split($2, arr, "\"");
           file=arr[n-1]
          }
        print > file }' multi_txt.xml

Code:
Error: nawk: XYZ.txt makes too many open files
 input record number 1644, file multi_txt.xml

I thought it could be file descriptor issue, and I increased the 'ulimit -n' limit from 8192 to 32768 but still didn't help.

Please help... Smilie

Close the current file before working with a new file :
Code:
nawk '{
          if ( $1 == "<bw" )
          {
           if (file) close(file);
           n=split($2, arr, "\"");
           file=arr[n-1]
          }
        print > file }' multi_txt.xml
