is there a direct command to find whether directory is empty, -s option doesn't seem to work.

sorry -s option only works for files.

I doubt, there is any direct command to check empty directory. however you could have several work around.

e.g. You could count the nbr of files in directory and check if count is zero

if [[ `ls -lt Directoty/* | wc -c` -eq 0 ]]
print "directory if empty"
else
print " directory is non empty"
fi
. There is one command "fc", I think if you research on this fc, it would allow you to check if directory is empty I am not pretty much sure about it.
