going crazy with test???

oK, i know for sure that code = Y and var = N but no matter what this always prints ignore, never valid???????

Code:
if test "$code" = "$var"
then echo "IGNORE"
else
echo "VALID" fi

you have to leave space before and after the equal sign.

"$code"="$var"

Here it will acts as a single string and since its length is greater than zero then test command is successful and thats why you get IGNORE always.
