yes now problem is coming with field.which we are using to cut f"value".
${pos[$k]}.
check the line below and compare in your script did you miss something.
Code:
cut -f${pos[$k]} jam2.txt>temp/tempjam${k}

cut -f${pos[$k]} jam2.txt >temp/tempjam${k}

missed nothing .

command working fine with comand prompt but giving error when using through shell script
invalid range//

need to check what is going in array.check how many times the error message is coming.is it generating any tempjam files?

k=0
while [ $k -lt $maxcol ]
do
echo "value at index $k is ${pos[$k]}"
#cut -d ' ' -f${pos[$k]} jam2.txt>temp/tempjam${k}
k=`expr $k + 1`
done

I don't find what was the problem ...as i was running the same thing that you mention in the cut -f.. every time.

probably the datafile was the culprit ! could be some spacing problem i don't know.
I have deleted the data file and recreated some test file with tab delimited and then run . it worked then !

Great man ! u made life easier and i have learn lot from you.
thanks again.
