Checking for spaces or pipes '|'

Hi,

I need to check format if input file. My input file has 4 fields. They should be seperated by a '|' or space. If not I have to throw an error. I have a script(which is not a generic one) to find out whether the fields are seperated by a '|' or not. How to do it for spaces.

Please help me out.

Thanks in advance

Hi, you could change all the spaces to "|" (pipes) then check for pipes only!

Try...
Code:
awk -F '[ |]' 'NF!=4 {exit 99}' file1
if [[ $? = 99 ]]
then
   echo invalid
else
   echo valid
fi
