Hi

If I have to find three strings from a file . Lets say strings are Exception , Failed, and error. How can we use grep command to find those strings from the file.

I am using following command now:

grep "Exception Failed Error" filename.sh

Also I want to store the string returned by above command in avariable say Z
so that I may put condition on Z.

Please advice

It is
Put those words in a file say pattern.txt. One word (pattern) per line. And then use
Code:
grep -f pattern.txt filename.sh

The above command will return lines contaning those strings. Do you want to store those lines in a variable ? What exactly do you want to do ?

I think he wants something like this:
Code:
Z=`grep -e "exception" -e "error" -e "failed" filename`

Hi

Even this does not served my pupose. Let me explain my problem in details

First I have to check for a string in a file called abs.log as follows :

grep -i "Failed" ./databaselog/abs.log ( ./databaselog/abs.log is the path for file abs.log)

Now I want the result to store in a variable say Z and check Z if it contains any string like Failed. eg

if [[ $Z -ne "Failed" ]]; then
echo "Success"
. /ags/hsf/trf/jkyt/abc.sh
else
mail -s "SQL ERROR" xyz@yahoo.com
fi

Kindly post me the code whic serves my above purpose

Thanks
Pankaj

grep -i "Failed" ./databaselog/abs.log
rcode=$? ############save the return code here if Failed found it would be 0
if [ $rcode -ne 0 ]
then
echo "No failed found run the script abc.sh"
. /ags/hsf/trf/jkyt/abc.sh
else
echo "Failed encounter ..."
mail -s "what ever " whatever@whatever.com
fi

I hope it will work

Hi

Great Idea !!! But I think I need to check the abs.log for the string FAILED.

If not found then only execute the dependent shell script ie . /ags/hsf/trf/jkyt/abc.sh

If Found should send a warning mail. I am using following code :

Z=`grep "BUILD FAILED" /opt/bea/wls61/config/dev05/batch_automation/MBPSBatch/databaselog/claim_extract.log`
if [[ $Z = "BUILD FAILED" ]]; then
echo $Z
echo " Failure"
else
echo "Success"
fi

And its not working

Please send me code

Regards
Pankaj

grep -i "BUILD FAILED" /opt/bea/wls61/config/dev05/batch_automation/MBPSBatch/databaselog/claim_extract.log
rcode=$? ############save the return code here if Failed found it would be 0
if [ $rcode -ne 0 ]
then
echo "No failed found run the script abc.sh"
. /ags/hsf/trf/jkyt/abc.sh
else
echo "Failed encounter ..."
mail -s "what ever " whatever@whatever.com
fi
------

this code should work !
you can't compare the Z with BUILD fail as the grep command doesn't return the searc pattern it return the entire line .
So always save the return code of the command and compare it with 0
Here : if the grep command found "build fail " in the search file then rcode most be zero
you can test the rcode and accordingly take the action

Cheer!
have try .
