one question on sed

what is the codes to sed content of a files to another file?

sed '10q' file1 > file2

that would give me first 10 lines, but i want to move all the content of file 1 to file2.

mv file1 file2

would replace everything, but file2 is a bigger than file1 and there are a lot of contents that i want to keep in file2. Anyway have any suggestion?

Thank you.

this will replace file2 with file1

Code:
sed -n '1,$p' file1>fil2

or for appending to file2 use >>

Show us an example of what you want to to (it's not very clear for me).

Let's assume file1 has 100 lines, and file2 has 200 lines. I wanted to use sed so that all the content of file1 will be move to file2 (which will replace the first 100 lines of file2, but save the rest of the contents of file2). Wonder if this makes more sense to you Jean-Pierre?

You can do something like this (no sed usage) :
Code:
keep_from=$(wc -l file1 | awk '{print $1+1}')
tail +${keep_from} file2 | cat file1 - > file2.tmp
mv file2.tmp file

You can use combination of 2-3 commands
count # of lines in file 1 and file2
cut (differnce of counts) from file using tail command to preserve remaining lines from file2
then use sed do replace file2 with file1 and then move this tmp file ( which has remaining lines of file2) to orig file2.
num1=`wc file1 | tail -1 | cut -d " " -f 1 `
num2=`wc file2 | tail -1 | cut -d " " -f 1 `
tail -`$num2-$num1` file2 > file2.tmp
sed -n '1,$p' file1>fil2
mv file2.tmp >> file2

You should be all set if you follow above pseudo code
