Shell Programming and Scripting

I would like to parse a file and use each record to create a unique file
where the name of the file created is taken from the 3rd field.

Example: here are 3 records.

000007 0110 07-0001583 20060802132213 20060801112601
000007 0110 07-0001584 20060802132213 20060801112601
000007 0110 07-0001585 20060802132214 20060801112601

I want awk to create 3 files where the file names would be generated
by the 3rd field of each record processed.

Using the above data the filenames should be:
07-0001583.txt
07-0001584,txt
07-0001585.txt

This is what I came up with but it fails badly.
awk ' { print $1 $2 $3 $4 $5 $6 > $3."txt" } ' *.log

Your help is appreciated.

.... and what exactly happened?
btw, looks like you have FIVE fields per record/line. How come you're trying to reference '$6'?

I get this error:

Your code worked perfectly!
Now I will put forth the time to try and understand what is happening.
