expr: syntax error. why?
i want to get a substring from a string and used such shell script:
var_year=`expr substr "07132006" 5 4`
echo $var_year

but i got such error message: expr: syntax error. why?

Note: Kshell used on solaris 8. Smilie

I am getting the same error on solaris so what i did is used awk.may be somebody can explain us. you can use this script for the same result.

echo "07132006" | awk '{ print substr( $0, 5, 4 ) }'

OR

echo "07132006" | awk '{ print substr( $0, length($0) - 3, length($0) ) }'
# 3

echo $X

you can use $X as 2006.

Also you can try using this :

a=12345
p=`expr $a : '\(...\)'`
echo $p
-----------------

o/p: 123

If you have ksh93, you can try something like this:

$ b=`echo ${a:4:4}`
$ echo $b
