another small question .. why i can't use variable as split() pattern ?

for example if i have :
my $str = "foo+1";
my $patt = '"+";
my @tmp = split("\$patt",$str);
the result is array (@tmp) with only 1 element that contains all the str string without the split .
why ? can't i use variables in split()?

Try adding the backslash in red:

By the way, of course you may use a variable to hold the pattern. It will work. You just used it incorrectly.

And, you can't really check whether the type of scalar variable is number or string, because Perl does not really let you know it, as string-numerical conversions are meant to be automatically performed as needed. You can only check if a variable is valid numerical syntax, or not, by regular expressions (or other mechanisms).
