Grep -q not works with multiples grep in same line

Hi,
I'm trying to make a grep to see if exists occurrences with a sentence like these:

Code:
grep -qi "message" file0 | grep -i $date | grep -vi "exception"
echo $?
1

If I execute without -q modifier I can find occurrences.

Someone could help me please?
Thanks and sorry for my English!

The -q flag makes grep avoid producing output, so it is doing what you ask. There will therefore not be any input to the second (or third) grep in the pipeline. The return code will be from the final grep -vi "exception" for which there is no input, therefore you get an eror return code - it didn't find any lines that did not have the word exception in them, in fact no lines at all. Are you looking for records that match the three conditions, but don't want to display them?

Try moving the -q to the final grep in the pipeline and see if that helps.

Kind regards,
Robin
