Hi,

How will I check whether the first line is starting with a "|" or not. That is if the input file is like this:
|MANI124 45

I shud give it as an error. Basically I shoud check if the line starts with a "|" symbol or not. How can I do it?

Thanks in advance

what else u can try is
Open the file in VI editor
place the curser at the left most of the line.
Press "Esc dd" (esc and then d button two times)

Code:
echo "|MANI123|23|41 " | grep -q "^|" && echo " Starts with |" || echo "Doesnt start with |"

If you dont like the echo statements, then catch the exit status soon after grep is over. 0 means it starts with |, 1 means, it doesnt start with a |.
