Convert mutiple spaces file to single tab
I have the following file I wanted to convert mutiple spaces to tab:

I tried
Code:
cat filename | tr ' ' '\t'    or sed 's/  */ /' FILE

but it looses the format

unexpand -a will do that for you. Check your system if it is available. In my system (Debian 8) it is part of coreutils.

I am using AIX, and it did worked for me unxpand -a <filename
