Generally I recommend a new variable, leaving the $27 field unchanged.
Code:
x27=$27?$27:"default_value";

Now you can use the x27 variable or the original $27.
Another reason is speed: modifying the $27 field denotes a rebuild of the input line $0.
The "value if-else" can be written as an ordinary if-then-else clause
Code:
if ($27) then x27=$27; else x27="default_value";

Honey, I broke awk! (duplicate line removal in 30M line 3.7GB csv file)

I have a script that builds a database ~30 million lines, ~3.7 GB .cvs file. After multiple optimzations It takes about 62 min to bring in and parse all the files and used to take 10 min to remove duplicates until I was requested to add another column.
