recording lines returned from fgrep...

Ok, I'm too used to c/java. I want to go through a file to search for lines matching a given string using:

fgrep "matchString" anyfile.dat;

This works like it should, but I would like to record the lines in an array, rather than echo them. Any ideas? Smilie

Thanks.

P.S. I'm using ksh.

out=`fgrep Sting anyfile.dat`

you can pipe this through while

Code:
i=0
echo "$out" | while read line
do
   array[$i]=$line
   i=$((i+1))
done

Using the quotes on the variable and reading the line will add the cr/lf as they are read. So, if you really don't need an array you can use the while stament to do the work.

Hope it helps.

Try...
Code:
set -A array $(fgrep "matchString" anyfile.dat)

Thanks.

Also, would I be able to do assign to a variable the ouput value of the following:

fgrep "matchString" anyfile.dat | wc -l

right now what I have is:

Code:
grep "^$1:" myfile.dat;
echo $?;

But this seems to only output the return value of the function. I would like the number of duplicates. And without printing the grep-ed lines.
