Wrench sed works on Linux but fails on Solaris

Hi,

On Linux i get the desired ouput:

Code:
echo "<value>WEB_USER</value>" | sed 's/\(<value>\|</value>\)//g'

Output:
Quote:
WEB_USER
Executing the same command on Solaris:

Code:
echo "<value>WEB_USER</value>" | sed 's/\(<value>\|</value>\)//g'

Output:
Quote:
<value>WEB_USER</value>
I need to get the desired output on Solaris i.e. WEB_USER and not <value>WEB_USER</value>

Why does it not behave the same on both OS ?
Note: Solaris:
Code:
bash-3.2$ uname -a
SunOS mymac 5.10 Generic_150400-23 sun4v sparc sun4v

Hello mohtashims,

Could you please try following and let me know if this helps.
Code:
echo "<value>WEB_USER</value>" | sed 's/<value>//g;s/</value>//g'

Output will be as follows.
Code:
WEB_USER

Thanks,
R. Singh

Seems like alternation doesn't work on your solaris sed. Try

Code:
echo "<value>WEB_USER</value>" | sed 's/<value>//;s/</value>//'
WEB_USER
