blowtorch, I don't think I can it at alll because I am still really confused about all these input and output...what I need is to get the respond when I sftp stuff to a remote server...stuff like

Connected to 111.11.11.11.
220 ABCDEFG1111 FTP server (Version 4.1 Tue Jul 6 21:20:07 CDT 2004) ready.
331 Password required for apple.
230-Last unsuccessful login: Fri Mar 17 15:42:02 HKG 2006 on ftp from TEST.aa.abcd
230-Last login: Fri Mar 17 16:46:23 HKG 2006 on ftp from HELLO.aa.abcd
230 User apple logged in.
250 CWD command successful.
200 PORT command successful.
150 Opening data connection for test.txt.
226 Transfer complete.
106212 bytes sent in 0.07196 seconds (1441 Kbytes/s)
local: test.txt remote: test.txt
221 Goodbye.

I want all the above to be in an variable or some sort so that I can write it to a log file for process later, could anyone explain how all these works? I am sorry for being so un-educated and that's why I am here...please help! Thanks!!!

OK. Just use this:

output=`sftp $AIS_USER\@$AIX_HOST << EOF 2>&1
cd /hsbc/risdev/risdevhfi/app/ftp/incoming
put "$filename"
quit
EOF`

Note that you cannot supply a password to sftp through a script, and must either supply the password at run time manually, or setup key-based authentication as reddymails has already said.

what if I need to use sftp2 -B $BATCHFILE $USER@$MYHOST#port? Can I still do what blowtorch suggested? thanks
