Sum column content

Hi,
in bash I have a text file like this.

Code:
text1	1.365E+08	1.363E+08	1.354E+08	1.314E+08	1.207E+08	8.964E+07	3.830E+07
text1	7.139E+08	7.131E+08	7.081E+08	6.875E+08	6.315E+08	4.689E+08	2.003E+08
text1	0.0000e+00	0.0000e+00	0.0000e+00	0.0000e+00	0.0000e+00	0.0000e+00	0.0000e+00

The file has three lines and a variable number of columns.
I would like to obtain the file with the sum of the column contents.

Code:
text1 sum_coulmn2 sum_column3...

Any help is appreciated.
S.

awk?

I had something like

Code:
awk -F'\t' '
  (/^[0-9]/ && $1 = sprintf("%.4E", $2 + $3 + $4)) || -3
  ' OFS='\t' file

but I think this was working for rows....as far as I recall

Assuming that your awk doesn't forget $1 nor NF in the END section, try:
Code:
awk '{for (i=2; i<=NF; i++) SUM[i]+=$i} END {printf "%s", $1; for (i=2; i<=NF; i++) printf "%s%s", FS, SUM[i]; printf "\n"}' file
text1 850400000 849400000 843500000 818900000 752200000 558540000 238600000

Hi.

See also package num-utils, which contains numsum:
Code:
$ numsum -c data1
0 850400000 849400000 843500000 818900000 752200000 558540000 238600000

For systems like:
Code:
OS, ker|rel, machine: Linux, 3.16.0-4-amd64, x86_64
Distribution        : Debian 8.3 (jessie)
numsum (pm:num-utils) 0.5-11

If it is not in one of your system repositories, see Index of /programs/num-utils

Best wishes ... cheers, drl

A bit of Perl?
Code:
perl -anle '$col{$F[0]}[$_] += $F[$_] for(1..$#F); END{for(keys %col){print "$_@{$col{$_}}"}}' numbers.txt

Code:
text1 850400000 849400000 843500000 818900000 752200000 558540000 238600000

In case you get unwanted E notation, you can force plain notation with %.f
Code:
awk '{for (i=2; i<=NF; i++) sum[i]+=$i} END {printf "%s", $1; for (i=2; i<=NF; i++) printf " %.f", sum[i]; printf "\n"}' file

An analogue perl solution
Code:
perl -anle '$sum[$_]+=$F[$_] for(1..$#F); END {print $F[0], join(" ",@sum)}' file
