Hi All,

I am trying to run a sed command to replace a string in a file.

Code:

sed -i -e "s/$Job_status_old ,$line/Job_status_new ,$line/g"  stat.txt

The command wen run from the command promt works fine.
But the same command does not work when its put in a script.

The script is not failing or anything but the command is not working.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

It is very hard to guess at what might be going wrong without seeing how you are setting the variables Job_status_old and line, what is in the file stat.txt before you run this command, and what is in the file stat.txt after you run this command.

And, it would help if you would also show us the results you are expecting for your sample input file.

And, since the sed -i option is not available on all implementations, it would also help to know what operating system and shell you're using.

Why do you replace ,$line with ,$line? That's a NOP (null operation). And, did you leave out the $ on Job_Status_new intentionally?

Does any of the variables used have a / or a regex char in it?

It worked.

The issue was a 'space between $Job_status_old and the comma','.

Code:

sed -i "s/$Job_status_old,$line/$Job_status_new,$line/g"
