What operating system are you using?

What shell are you using?

Where are these names? (Shell variables, files, a database, strings in a C program, ...?)

What do you want to do with the combined names? (Store them in a shell variable, print them to standard output, ... ... ...?)

What have you tried?

Consider:

Code:
echo "${firstname} ${lastname}" | sed -n 's/^\([^ ][^ ][^ ][^ ][^ ][^ ][^ ]\)[^ ]* \(.\).*/\1\2/p'

Since you did not answer the questions where are these names and what do you want to do with the combined names, the following is just an illustration of what it can be done.

Code:
#!/bin/bash

name="user"
family_name="lastname"
echo ${name:0:7}${family_name:0:1}
name="username"
echo ${name:0:7}${family_name:0:1}

Consider also:
Code:
username=`echo "${firstname} ${lastname}" | sed -n -e 's/^\([^ ][^ ][^ ][^ ][^ ][^ ][^ ]\)[^ ]* \(.\).*/\1\2 /' -e 's/^\([^ ][^ ]*\) .*/\1/p'`

by awk

echo "user lastname" | awk ' { print substr ($1,1,7) substr($2,1,1) } '
