I am using solaris 10 either ksh or bsh shell will work.
I am not sure how to start with it.
I'm not familiar with bsh on Solaris 10, but with bash, ksh, /usr/bin/sh, and /usr/xpg4/bin/sh, the following should work:
Code:
printf '%.7s%.1s\n' "$firstname" "$lastname"

Not totally sure, but OP wants firstname if 7 chars or less or first 7 chars followed by first char of lastname. (just saying)

Look at the examples in post #1 again. It shows: no more than seven characters of first name followed by no more than one character of last name:

Code:
username lastname => usernaml
user lastname => userl
